Home design tips for greater productivity

February 28, 2022

Home design can play a vital role in productivity. However, in the case of the home office, or study room, form is just as important as function. Ergonomic and adjustablefurniture and fixtures are just as important as the accent pieces.

But the great thing about a home office is the full control you have on design decisions, which makes this room as much a personal space as a space for productive work and study.

In this article, we share practical tips for boosting productivity in your work space.

First things first: choose a well-lit spot

Picking a dedicated spot for your office is the first step towards greater productivity while working or studying at home. If you have a spare room, ensure that it receives ample natural light. A well-lit room certainly contributes to a better sense of well-being and motivation versus a closed-in space. To manage the flow of light, install plantation shutters in your home office.

And as with any other room in your house, equip your home office with a mix of task, ambient, and accent lighting. These will not only provide illumination as the sun goes down but lighting can call highlight design features of your home office.

Pick furniture that works for you

Pay special attention to items that you will often use. Foremost among this is the work desk and chair. Don’t limit yourself to a standard desk similar to those often found in the corporate setting. You can certainly opt for a piece that aligns more with your interior style.

A mid-century modern inspired desk with a wooden table top and sleek legs is a flexible design choice. Ani intricate dining table can provide a larger work space that can be used by both working adults and kids doing homework.

On the other hand, a strong case can be made for working while standing up and a variety of rising desks are now easier to come by. These usually come in minimalist designs that you can easily dress up with stylish tabletop pieces. Conversely, you can opt for a sturdy desktop riser that you can place on your existing table.

As for your office chair, it pays to invest in an ergonomic piece that will support your back through the work day. Thankfully, office chairs although largely modern in their aesthetic, now come in a greater variety of styles to choose from.

Organize with style

Home offices, as with other rooms in your house, are privy to everyday messes, which in turn can negative affect productivity. Keep work detritus at bay with stylish itemsfor organizing supplies, books, electronics, and other odds and ends. Look for pieces in interesting textures and eye-catching materials like granite, ceramic, metal, acrylic or something earthier like rattan.

Furthermore, consider using cable organizers to prevent gadget chargers, USB cables and other item from creating a visual mess.

And amid all these practical items, don’t forget to add decorative pieces to breathe life into your space, such as an indoor plant or a framed photo of a loved one or a favorite vacation spot.

Get inspired

A gallery of paintings or photos that you love—or even DIY drawings by your kids. A mood board to house images, textures, and text that inspires you. A shelf full of your favorite books on design or otherwise.

A productivity-boosting home office should succeed not only in the home design aspect but in the elements that stimulate you creatively and rouse ideas.
