Top 5 Mid-year Updates to Your Home Interior Design

We’re halfway through the year and it’s the perfect time to do a refresh of your home’s interior design. In this article we share 5 ways to update your space, from easy swaps to more thoughtful switches.

Change up the fabrics in your living room

There are several ways to creatively go about this. First of all, if you haven’t been updating your throw pillows, now is the time to change it up. Combine solid colors and prints (make sure the print picks up on a color for one of the solids). You can even place a fabric throw on your sofa set to create more texture.

Reupholstering your seating is another way to update your fabric. If you have a statement chair, change it to a new color (pick a bright hue to add an interesting pop to your living area). Other pieces to consider for reupholstery is your largest sofa or a pair of accent chairs.

Reposition your furniture

Another way to update the look of your interior design is to simply move around your furniture. Re-arrange seating in your living area. If you need to make any updates like incorporating a home office in the space, now is the time to do that. You can also reposition your seating so that they are not arranged around the placement of your TV. In this way, the area can be focused mainly on socials.

In the dining room, reconfigure depending on your space. Whether your dining room is incorporated into your kitchen or in a formal area in your home, you can play around with different types of dining sets (add banquet seating to create a breakfast nook) and placements of appliances and furniture like a china cabinet or buffet.

You can also re-arrange the furniture in your bedroom. Play around with the placement of the bed, seating (whether it’s a pair of chairs with a small table or a long ottoman), your work desk, and free-standing storage, if any.

Incorporate creative storage

You’d be surprised how many creative ways you can explore to add more storage to your home. Here are some examples you can look into.

• Add pull-out storage built into stair steps.

• Use an odd space under the staircase for built-in or freestanding storage

• Have custom storage built into odd nooks and crannies.

• Add a slim roll-out cart to your kitchen.

Update your walls

Whether it’s removing or replacing old wallpaper or repainting an accent wall, updating your wall makes for a fairly easy but interesting update to your home interior design. For an accent wall, choose one side and paint in an eye-catching hue.

For wallpaper, consider flora and fauna prints, which are very on-trend this 2022. Up the ante of the nature inspiration, and take note from biophilic design, by picking a well-lit, well ventilated spot and bringing indoor plants into your space to complement your walls.

Update your art collection—or start one

If you have an art collection, consider updating your collection by visiting art fairs, galleries, or speaking to your art consultant. Or if you wish to work with your existing collection of paintings, sculptures, and functional art, consider rearranging your pieces differently or transferring specific items to other parts of the home. Perhaps combine these with other objects of interest such as a sculpture with a stack of books.
